Meet Ms. Samantha,
Ashbrook’s Drama Teacher

I have loved theater since I was a small child. Maybe it was my first lead role in 5th grade in Sis Boom Bah, or any number of other incredible experiences on the stage, but for me nothing compares to the bonding, excitement, terror, and confidence that comes from participating in live theater! I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the production process, especially watching students start with a script and bring a character to life.

In addition to teaching, I have been lucky to have had multiple careers including working as a financial educator, and as a career and mental health counselor. It has been thrilling to return to the theater – and to be working again with children of all ages. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and English Literature from Eastern Michigan University; a Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Oregon State University; and a Master’s degree in Theater Arts from Portland State University.

I am originally from Detroit, and moved to Oregon in 2000 for the wonderful wilderness, and Oregon hasn’t disappointed. My husband Nate and I have been together for 28 excellent years, and have two awesome kiddos – Hazel (17) and Quinn (14). I love traveling (I’ve been to 15 countries so far); cooking and eating food from all over the world; reading anything and everything; hiking on any trail, but especially those lined with pine needles; swimming in ice cold mountain lakes and rivers (the Mamquam in British Columbia may be the coldest yet); and snuggling with my big drooly dog, Mudge. You can usually find me having a ton of fun on the stage or in the Green Room.

Frequently asked questions

1st – 4th Grade:

Currently enrolled students in 1st-4th grade can get a taste of theater in the fall by joining the Lower School Theater Club, in October. This is a great place to have fun, play theater games, learn about theater, the audition process and play a part in the fall Lower School play that will be held in December. Everyone will be cast from the Theater Club.

5th*-8th Grade:

Students who are 5th-8th grade can audition for the winter play (performance dates are typically late February or early March), keep your eyes open for audition announcements coming in December. Rehearsals for the Middle School winter play will be in January and February.

*5th Grade:
Once you are in 5th grade you will have a 6 week theater arts elective rotation with Ms. Samantha in the fall (term 1). This is a nice introduction to theater and culminates in a Staged Reading.

Audition are held in December.  Ms. Samantha, Ashbrook’s Drama Teacher, is looking for actors that work well with others, are able to take direction, and also possess the ability to focus. Not everyone is ready for the time commitment, rigor, self-management and discipline required for the Middle School play, and sometimes there is more interest than parts. If you do not get a part, don’t be discouraged and please try again next year. There may also be opportunities to work backstage.

There are also many theater arts electives available to 6th-8th graders throughout the year as well (offerings vary by year and term).

These may include :

Acting Challenge

Acting Lab

Beginning Scenic Design

Behind The Scenes

Directing Lab

Playwriting Lab

Reader’s Theater

Previous Ashbrook Productions

1

Understanding Your Pet with Dr. Marla Brett

This was a fast-moving comedy that explored what might happen if humans could truly understand their pets. When a scientist’s experimental pill gave animals an uncensored voice, the results were hilarious, chaotic, and unexpectedly revealing. Through humor and absurdity, the play examined communication, empathy, and the unintended consequences of scientific ambition.

2

Journey to the World’s Edge

Was a lyrical folk tale rooted in Irish legend, following a young hero’s perilous quest where magic and hope tested the limits of courage and resolve. Blending music, myth, and moments of quiet bravery, the production invited audiences into a world where wishes carried consequences and the true journey was as much inward as it was across distant lands.

3

A Recipe of Me

Was a heartfelt production that explored all the wonderful ingredients that make up a family. Through moments of humor, reflection, and connection, the play highlighted how food, love, and shared experiences shape who we are.
