At Ashbrook Independent School, our curriculum is vigorous, not rigorous, as in stiff, cold, harsh, or severe. Through the vigor of our curriculum, academic excellence isn’t just a chore, it’s our daily joyous calling, carefully designed to engage, challenge, and inspire students at every level. Ashbrook doesn’t settle for rote learning or teaching to the test. Instead, our curriculum challenges students to think deeply, write clearly, ask big questions, and explore the world with intellectual curiosity and confidence.
Our students don’t just study literature, they unpack it in rich Socratic discussions that rival high school classrooms. They don’t just complete science labs, they engage in authentic scientific inquiry, from dissecting owl pellets in the Lower School to designing independent research projects in our Advanced Science electives. In math, students advance as they are ready, from the fourth grade, with many middle schoolers completing high school-level algebra and geometry courses prior to 9th grade. And across all disciplines, we ask students to think critically about what they are learning, evaluate information, and apply what they learn, not just memorize it. As our Founder David Gore is fond of saying, “At Ashbrook, we don’t teach students what to think, we teach them how to think.”
