Ashbrook Independent School

Foreign Languages

Three foreign languages are taught at Ashbrook Independent School: French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

The foreign languages are introduced at the kindergarten level on a three-year rotational basis.

  • The foreign languages are taught in daily pullout classes.
  • Students study the same language through grade four.
  • Beginning in grade five, students have the opportunity to study a different language.

All foreign language students participate in a Foreign Language Festival, presenting skits in their respective languages.

Verbal fluency is emphasized, especially in the Lower School. Foreign languages at this level are taught primarily through role playing, songs, games, and hands-on activities such as cooking. Language classes also allow students to learn about another culture and acquire global perspectives.

Higher level foreign language students typically reach sufficient proficiency to place into second or third year high school language courses.
