Art, Music, and Drama

Art Program

An art specialist provides instruction for K-8. Art history complements the curriculum that includes a broad range of media and techniques.

In the Middle School, studio art is offered as a Core II elective each term. Additional art electives are also offered, including:

  • Studio Arts
  • Ceramics
  • Cartooning
  • Sculpture

Music Program

All Ashbrook students, pre-kindergarten through grade eight, enjoy music instruction from a specialist.

Pre–kindergarten through fourth grade students go to the music specialist from one to five times per week. Lower School, students learn vocal and instrumental pieces for community performances. In fourth grade, all students study musical instruments and are encouraged to choose one to further develop. From the fifth grade on, most students play in the school band or orchestra.

Ashbrook music concerts are presented several times each year. All grade levels and performance groups participate.

Middle School Music

Middle School students can choose from a variety of music electives to fulfill their music requirements. Middle School Music Core II electives can include:

  1. Band (levels 1,2 and 3)
  2. Jazz Band
  3. Orchestra
  4. Choir

Drama/Performing Arts

Drama and presentation skills are emphasized in class work from the earliest grade levels. Middle school drama includes performance classes, after-school play production, playwriting, dramatic readings, class skits, and more.

Ashbrook’s theater department produces a spring children’s production annually. This is a high caliber, educational program for all grade levels. Past productions have included “Charlotte’s Web”; “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe”; “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”; “East of the Sun, West of the Moon”; “Still Life with Iris”; “Wiley and the Hairy Man”; and “The Phantom Tollbooth”. Participation in this production is through audition.

Ashbrook has hosted an annual parent-run talent show where students can share their talents in music, dance, comedy, theater, or other forms of performance.
